I’m sure you’ve all heard that you’re supposed to get your wisdom teeth out, OR ELSE!? I wouldn’t go that far in stating that it absolutely has to happen or your teeth will be in mortal danger. But here are some quick tidbits on what you should know about taking out those pesky wisdom teeth.

First off, what exactly are wisdom teeth? And why do we have them? If you didn’t know, you have three molars on each side of your upper and lower jaws. Your wisdom teeth are the third molar, the very last right at the back.

Your oral surgeon will typically recommend that wisdom teeth should be removed between the ages of 18 and 24 years. But that is not always the case! In some instances, if your wisdom teeth have come in, and they aren’t giving you any problems, there is no need to take them out!

Most likely, wisdom teeth don’t grow in properly. A tooth is impacted, which means it is in a weird position underneath the tissue. That means it’s being prevented from reaching its normal position.

Impacted teeth can cause problems with chewing and damage the teeth next door. A tooth can be partially impacted too. Meaning it has broken through the surface of the gums but can’t grow into a normal position.

If you will need to get them removed, it is a small surgery. You can either have the option of being sedated, or “put under” or, you have the option of taking an oral sedative. You will be awake during the procedure, but you may feel a little loopy.
